SLBC’s Favourite Beer Myths

Information in this document is fictional and intended for entertainment purposes only.  It is not to be used as medical guidance in any way!

1. In first place, our favourite beer myth is that beer helps you concentrate! Malt and hop contain lots of group B and P vitamins which also help mental activity

2. Beer helps prevent some heart problems?  A single beer per day has been found to help reduce cholesterol in the blood, and reduce blood clotting, great news for cardiovascular patients.

3. Beer strengthens bones? Once again, a single beer per day has been found to increase bone density, as a result of research carried out in this area; dietary silicon intake is positively associated with bone mineral density.  The mineral silicone is beneficial in its role of strengthening the bone and muscle system in our bodies, silicone is also found in beer!

4. Dark beer is stronger than light beer.  Beer gets colour from roasting some or all of the grains that go into it. The thicker the roast, the darker the beer. But this has virtually no effect on alcohol content, which is determined by the quantity of malt used and the degree to which it is fermented.

5. Beer enlarges breasts??  Apparently, Prussian Queen Louise who had flat breasts was advised to drink beer and smear her breasts with beer three times a day to help them grow!!  I wonder who gave that invaluable advice!

6. Beer hastens hair growth?  The same vitamins which aid mental activity are also reputed to affect hair growth, as these vitamins are found in two of the key ingredients in beer, i.e. malt and hops, you can purchase nourishing masks to apply to your hair to help it grow!

7. Beer cures the common cold?  Beer has bactericidal behaviour, if you drink warm beer while having cold or flu, some believe it is possible to recover faster. In Medieval times during plague and cholera epidemic brewery workers rarely were ill.

8. Beer gives you soft skin?  During the 16th Century women were advised to wash themselves with beer in order to soften their skin!

9. Beer bellies are caused by beer? Beer bellies are not caused by drinking beer - there may be calories in beer, which if consumed in large amounts of course lead to weight gain, but there are no traces of fat.  Beer bellies are known to be attributed to the beer snacks and greasy unhealthy food that accompanies drinking.  So, drinking in moderation might not lead to that beer belly after all?

10. Imported beers are stronger!  American beers used to be measured by weight where imported beer alcohol content is measured by volume which made the imported beers appear stronger if close attention was not paid to the label (ABV/ABW)

So, what facts are we basing our knowledge on that the above statements aren’t true?  Well, we know they aren’t true because if they were…  Homer from the Simpson’s would be a genius with great athletic ability, pop-eye like muscles, the healthy bones of a superhero, with a full head of hair and large breasts!!!
