St Patrick’s Ale/Dark

Background

St. Patrick’s Ale/Dark is one of three Irish beers from our St. Patrick’s range, alongside St. Patrick’s Best and Gold. Here’s a little bit about the man the beers are named after:

St. Patrick’s missionary work covered the northern part of Ireland where Christianity had not penetrated.  At Slane he converted King Laogaire to Christianity and at Croaghpatrick in Mayo he is alleged to have driven the snakes out of Ireland.  He died at Raholp on 17th March 461AD and is buried on the ‘Hill of Down’, Downpatrick.

 


Brewer Notes

A deep copper coloured traditional Irish Ale with highly developed and complex flavours. St Patrick’s Ale/Dark is brewed with four malts and two hops, carefully married together to complement eachother producing a satisfying full flavour, ending with a Styrian late hop for a truly brilliant finish.


Name

In the USA St. Patrick’s Ale has been renamed St. Patrick’s Dark. That’s because on our labels the TTB required us to put the word ‘ale’ after all the beer names. Rather than have a beer called St. Patrick’s Ale Ale we decided to go with a name change and call it St. Patrick’s Dark Ale.

The ABV of St. Patrick's Ale/Dark is 6.0%.

Review

Pour and Appearance: Pours with a dark amber body, verging on scotch ale colour as its almost a chocolaty brown, fairly good creamy head with fair retention, some lacing.

Smell: Smell, ohhh, lots of lovely esters, thick hint of malt, some sweetness coming off, some hints of english hops.

Flavour: Taste, sweet and a really creamy mouthfeel, some hint of caramel, good solid mouthfeel, nice bitterness on the finish.

Overall: I was talking to one of the brewers on here about the release of this stuff, and while I was looking forward to trying it here at the fest, it wasn’t my highest priority, however, as it ended up being the first thing I tried, it blew me away, a fantastic local ale, up there with Legbiter (which I’ve yet to try on cask).
